The US Olympic Trials are a national gymnastics competition that are held every four years to select the team that will compete at the Olympics that year. Only a certain amount of gymnasts who competed at the National Championships could advance to the Olympic Trials. The format of competition has changed over the years. Up until 1996, the all-around standings after the competition would determine the team. In 2000, the selection of the team was left to USA Gymnastics and the Olympic selection committee. This method would also be used in 2012. In 2004 and 2008, there would be two guaranteed spots on the team that would go to the top two all-around gymnasts at the end of Trials.

The other four spots would be given out after an invitational training camp at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas.
