I can see where that can come off as tasteless, but people do run games in ww2 and the holocaust, and many RPG's take place in terrible times. The fact that 1920's china was one of the most worst periods to live in makes it excellent fodder for RPG's and makes me more interested in using it in a game. What exactly makes it so terrble as to make it off limits to exploration through an RPG?

The wikipedia page for the republic of china sounds like a great period for an RPG to be set in. Warlords, Foreign invasion/Intervention, political turmoil, Civil war, Social Change due to indurstrialization and modernization. It sounds like a great setting for an RPG to be set in. • • • • • • •. Well, it's that you're making a game that inherently subjects one of the great tragedies of human history to mythologization - you're taking famine, mass torture, and colonialism and treating it as insufficiently interesting and tragic in-and-of itself: the focus isn't placed on these real, human horrors, but on invented ones. It would be like if a movie about the holocaust turned into one about zombies half-way through, with zombie prisoners and zombie guards or something.

Additionally, there is of course a racial element here, coming from both the racism of Lovecraft and the colonial nature of the warlord era itself. The implication even seems to be that you will be setting it in the colonial concession of Shanghai. Even if that is not the case, the Cthulhu mythos (including, at times, the CoC RPG) has a tendency to treat non-white religious practices as generally being -for lack of a better word- 'mythos-y'. The titular call of cthulhu story even cites the cult of cthulhu as being centered in China and led by 'deathless Chinamen'. So, actually setting in colonized China a campaign of a game that takes its name from a story about a global Chinese-led conspiracy to destroy humanity understandly makes me. • • • • • • •. Placing focus on invented horrors is inherent to a RPG.
